Worth A Punt??

So here we are with the Golfing in Style predictions again. Last time out we had a couple of top 10’s but unfortunately didn’t predict Bubba Watson to win The Masters and definitely didn’t predict the shot that won him the trophy…..wow!

But with the US Open this year being played at the aptly named Olympic Club is San Fran., we feel that we can give you a few hot tips for the title that currently belongs to Rory McIlroy. From the obvious to a couple of outsiders that are worth a cheeky bet.

Top Tips

1.    Lee Westwood – 13/1 – Yes I will come out and say it like everyone else has. This guy is due a major soon! He is just too good and too consistent not to win one eventually. Luck just needs to be on his side. With Lee just winning in Sweden in convincing fashion he should be full of confidence. Could this tournament finally be Lee’s time?

2.    Luke Donald – 14/1 – At this price for the world number one, you’d be crazy not to at least but a cheeky fiver on him. He has won again and again and seems to be in contention on a weekly basis. His last appearance was at the BMW PGA at Wentworth. In itself a course capable of hosting a major and he took it in his stride for the second year running. Could this be Luke’s time to win his first major and back up his world number one status?

3.    Dustin Johnson – 30/1 – A great price for one of golf’s true athletes. He has only just come back from a few months out with injury (sporting a new beard) and wins at the first time of asking.  He has been in contention at majors twice before but has seemingly slipped away on the Sunday. He has the power to dominate any golf course, even the long Olympic Club but does he have the mental toughness?

4.    Jason Dufner – 30/1 – The waggle man of golf is delivering week after week this year. He may never smile and actually look as if you just insulted his mother but this guy is on cloud 9 right now. A couple of wins and some good finishes, not to mention a recent marriage. Watch out for his trademark club waggle on final Sunday.

5.    Ricky Fowler – 35/1 – The man in orange is finally showing us all what we knew he was capable of for the last few years. Ricky has been hyped up as soon as he burst on to the scene but this is the year when he is really living up to all that hype and potential. Now with his first PGA Tour win bagged could he go and secure one of the big four trophies.

6.    Nicholas Colsaerts – 150/1 – OK I admit that the price may put you off but he should not have odds like this. If he can string together four good rounds on the bounce then this Belgium could destroy the field. Like Quiroz he is an awesomely long hitter, he’s just not on a Callaway advert. He won the Volvo Matchplay which is no mean feat in itself and is capable of causing an upset here. He is also our tip for making it into this year’s Ryder Cup team.

Bad Tips

1.    Tigers Woods – 7/1 - Now here is a golfer that the world is still obsessed with. Rightly so as he has brought millions of fans into the game and millions upon millions of pounds into it to boot. Realistically though, does he have a chance of winning? No. admittedly he won two weeks ago at The Memorial, but his form is so erratic that he surely can’t put together 4 perfect rounds at one of the toughest and tightest courses in America.

2.    Rory MciIlroy – 14/1 - Yes everyone automatically puts the current champion at the top of the betting, but take a second and put that out of your mind. Ask yourself about his current form. 3 missed cuts in a row and then when in contention after two days at the St Jude Classic, he was most un Rory like and extremely scrappy. Unless something miraculous happens in the next few days then I’m afraid the UK’s most loved golfer will not be retaining his trophy.

3.    Phil Mickelson – 20/1 – Putting it bluntly the darling of the US does not stand a chance here. Harsh but true! Phil admittedly plays some amazing golf, good enough to win any major but in recent times is a slow starter and has to make up a 10 shot deficit that some VERY wayward drives have cost him.

Well that wraps up our top tips for this year’s US OPEN. Hopefully you will have gained something from reading our predictions and you never know, you might win some money too.
